A short list of sources we actually use, rather than a long one. Every link below was checked before publication; if one has moved since, the organisation behind it is still the right place to look.

Breed standards and registries

• American Kennel Club — Cairn Terrier. Breed description, the official US standard, and links through to national breed-club resources.
• The Kennel Club (UK) — Cairn Terrier breed standard. The British standard, useful for comparison; the two texts describe the same dog with different emphases.

Breed clubs

• Cairn Terrier Club of America. The breed's national parent club: breeder referral, rescue coordination, health initiatives and educational material for owners.
• Cairn Terrier Club of Northern California. The regional breed club for this part of California. Anything club-related — membership, events, breeder referral, rescue — is a question for them and not for us. This site has no connection to it — see about this site.

Health and screening

• Orthopedic Foundation for Animals — CHIC by breed. Which health tests a breed's parent club recommends, and a searchable public database of results for individual dogs. This is the single most useful link on this page if you are buying a puppy.
• Cornell Riney Canine Health Center. Accessible, evidence-based owner information from a veterinary teaching hospital.
• American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. The specialist body behind breed eye-screening examinations.
• GeneReviews — Krabbe disease. Detailed clinical reference on globoid cell leukodystrophy, a rare inherited condition documented in the breed.
• AKC health advice library. General canine health writing for owners.

Behaviour, training and general care

• American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior — position statements. Concise, evidence-based statements on socialisation, punishment and dominance theory. Worth reading before you buy any training equipment.
• ASPCA dog care. Solid general guidance on feeding, body condition and everyday care.
• AKC Earthdog. The structure and levels of earth-working tests, for anyone curious about what their terrier was built to do.

On the club newsletters and archives

The Cairn Terrier Club of Northern California published a members' newsletter for many years, and copies of it circulated widely enough to be indexed by document-search sites. We do not host, mirror or reproduce those newsletters or any other club publication: they are the club's work and they name its members. Anyone with an interest in that material should approach the club directly through its own website, linked above.

How we choose sources

Preference goes to veterinary schools, specialist veterinary colleges, national breed clubs and registries — organisations that publish under their own name and correct themselves in public. We avoid content farms, breed-directory sites that recycle the same paragraphs, and anyone selling puppies. Every outbound link on this site was individually checked to confirm it returns real content rather than an error page or a bot wall.

If you are new to the breed, the sensible reading order is the breed profile, then temperament, then either finding a puppy or breed rescue depending on your route.
